Chapter Fifteen

“You do realize this Keeper’s smarter than we gave her credit for at the start?” Gideon murmured to Rhys.

Oh, yeah.

The way they’d pigeonholed Maisy might well go down as the worst judgment call of their careers. To say they’d underestimated the Keeper solely due to her, well, annoying-as-fuck perkiness? That was like saying morphine could dull the sting of a hangnail.

But it was never wise to just hand Gideon ammunition. Rhys looked over the top of his shades. “In what way?”

“She’s learned all our weaknesses. In only a week.” Gideon buttoned his tan sport coat. “She played us, Rhys. How else do you explain us spending our morning in an old folks’ home?”

It was true. She’d charmed Gideon by pointing out that the residents didn’t get many visitors, let alone massively tall, handsome ones.

Convinced Zavier that his weapons knowledge would enliven the old soldiers.

And, well, she’d flirted with Rhys.

Since he could still almost taste her kisses from last night? It’d worked. Not that he’d admit it to Gid.

“Maisy lets nothing stand in the way of achieving her goal. She’s much like us in that respect.”

“I’d say more that she steamrolled you.”

“She is to be the Keeper. It’s our duty to do as she wishes.”

The side-eye Gideon gave him at that was sharp enough to cut glass. “You really think she’ll be Keeper?”

“I think she’ll make it to the Test. None of us can guess what will happen during it. Hell, none of us can find out what comprises the Test.”

Gideon looked left and right, then angled closer to Rhys. “About that…think Caraxis is holding out on us on purpose?”

“To what end?”

“To make it a test for us as much as for her?”

Rhys stopped in his tracks as, ahead of them, Zavier opened the door for Maisy. “Damn his sneaky old hide. You’re probably right.”

“Dude, don’t say probably. It’s insulting and inaccurate. I’m always right.” Gideon spurted ahead to catch up. “Hang on, Maisy. Don’t go in yet.”

The long floral skirt billowed around her ankles as she spun to face him. “They’re on a strict schedule. The window between breakfast and stretching and crafts and then lunch doesn’t leave me much time to visit with Mrs. Rathbone.”

Rhys still couldn’t believe they were visiting her old art teacher. How many people stayed in touch with their teachers a dozen years past graduation?

“This won’t take long. I’ve got a tincture for you. Four drops, under the tongue.” Gideon brandished a small bottle.

“What for?”

“It’ll let you see magical auras. An early warning system. Not all mystical creatures are evil, but if you do see someone with a muddy, brown aura, get one of us.”

“Why not give me the thing that lets me actually see demons? That potion I took the other day.”

Ah. Rhys knew she was baiting Gideon. Forcing him to reveal that he hadn’t been entirely truthful about the potion. This would be enjoyable to watch.

“Well”—Gideon drew the word out, long and slow—“humans can’t have it very often. Side effects of seeing things you’re not supposed to see.
